Dr. Andrew D. Sutton is Group Leader for Chemical Process Scale-Up at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where the focus is carbon-neutral fuels and products. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Manchester and spent a decade at Los Alamos National Laboratory before moving to ORNL. His work builds more complex carbon scaffolds from bio-derived building blocks, developing catalysts for carbon–carbon bond formation and selective defunctionalisation at low temperature and pressure — chemistry that ORNL has licensed for sustainable jet fuel production.
He is a co-author on the ethanol upgrading study in Applied Catalysis B and on the 2,3-butanediol mechanism work. Seeing how the same chemistry is judged when it has to scale has been one of the most useful perspectives I have been given, and I am grateful for it.
